Charlie and Maria School Journal Part 2 number 1 2007 Extended abstract work for reading (POEM)

Why TV is an amazing invention

Television is a good invention Television is a wonderful and amazing invention that millions of people around the world use. Just think about what the world would be like without this beloved invention! TV is educational, it is entertaining and it is relaxing and therefore reduces stress. I strongly believe that the TV is a good invention. A world without TV would be dull, gloomy and boring.

How TV can be educational TV has taught people many things, it is a fantastic educational tool. There are many educational TV shows in the world and if you encourage your child to watch some of those then watching TV can be good for them. Some of the educational shows are Fish of the Day where Clark Gayford goes fishing in different places and explains good fishing techniques,Team Umizumi, a show for little kids that teaches you maths-eg:shapes, patterns and numbers. Another educational show for kids is the Magic School Bus, a show that teaches children science concepts based around children and a magic school bus. There are also other educational shows that other people can watch, for example Family Feud, hosted by Dai Henwood, which can teach you general knowledge and also the news that tells you about events happening around the world. Children in Finland have scored higher than most schools around the world in their reading scores because they watch important American shows that they can't understand so they turn on the captions in their own language and therefore have to read very fast so that they can keep up with the show. They are reading and viewing at the same time. So turn on the captions next time you watch TV. So now you know that TV can be educational if you do and watch what I included in this paragraph.

Secondly,TV is an entertaining invention and without it the millions of people that watch TV would have the most boring life ever. This wonderful creation has brought joy to many people’s lives. Have you ever wondered how many different types of TV shows there are? Well, there are lots and lots for example: comedies, cartoons, spooky stories, fantasy, sci-fi and action. With this wide range of shows you can watch anything that suits you at the time or entertains you. Some people choose a show that suits their mood at the time, for example, if you are really tired, then you can relax and watch a funny comedy. TV is exciting! Some shows keep you in suspense while other shows can excite you with bright and colourful animated characters. Lots of shows keep you in suspense and make you want to watch the next episode and some amaze you with the wonderful stunts. Watching TV teleports you to a whole new world of imagination.

Thirdly, watching TV can be very relaxing and can reduce stress levels. A study done on women says that watching TV can lower their cortisol levels. Cortisol is a stress hormone in your body that rises if you are stressed and reduces if you are not stressed (it is low). Women are not stressed because they are sitting still instead of moving around. When you're feeling stressed, you probably know that something like exercise or meditation will relieve your stress in the short run and build resilience in the long run, but sometimes you might find yourself more likely to climb into bed and watch a re-run of a favorite show, then emerge from your cocoon with more energy and patience. It has been said that when you watch TV it releases endorphins in the brain which are hormones that makes you happy. Conclusion I firmly believe that TV is an amazing invention that has changed human lives for the better. Life without this beloved masterpiece would just be dull and gloomy and nobody wants that! So have some fun watching TV with the captions on. Firstly, it is educational. Secondly it is very entertaining and lastly it can reduce stress. I hope you agree with me that TV is an awesome invention. So………….. Head inside and switch on the TV and have the time of your life!
